This year, students from Holztechnikum Kuchl – a technical college for the timber industry – were once again guests at EPSILON. With the trip falling right at the beginning of the school year, this time students were on the lookout for interesting ideas for this year's final projects.

Class teacher Dr Felber explains: "At Holztechnikum Kuchl we focus intensely on all aspects of the timber and forestry industries and the versatile processing options available for this natural resource. But, before we can even begin processing the trunks, the timber must be felled, manoeuvred and transported. EPSILON, which is based in nearby Elsbethen, is not only the market leader when it comes to manufacturing the cranes required for this work – it is also the most technologically innovative company in the world. We are therefore delighted that today our final year students have been given another exciting opportunity to learn about the company and the technologies behind it".

During their visit, the students were taken on a tour lasting several hours, which gave them a detailed insight into the workflow and development activities at EPSILON. Florian Höllbacher, area sales manager for Central Europe, then gave a short presentation in which he outlined some of the specifications that a modern forest crane must fulfil in today's timber industry, including excellent reliability, precise controllability and optimum safety. Afterwards, engineers from the development department explained the technical and material requirements that result from these specifications, which in recent years have led EPSILON to introduce new materials, such as technical thermoplastic, and new control technologies, such as piloted joysticks, to the forest crane technology sector.

The day was rounded off with a special tour of the recently opened assembly hall and the new innovation centre. All in all it was a successful day for the students, as can be seen from the report on the visit by Sebastian Pascht from class 4AF, on the Holztechnikum website.

EPSILON has set itself the objective of assisting budding engineers as best it can and hopes the students find plenty of good ideas for their final projects!
