MM Forsttechnik counts on EPSILON – customer-specific crane development for cable yarding technology presented at Austrofoma
The development department at EPSILON has always been open to new customer requests and is able to come up with a lot of ideas for their requirements. This was precisely the case for the first processor crane for cable technology developed by EPSILON. After over a year of intensive development work, the cable yarding systems manufacturer Mayr-Melnhof Forsttechnik, based in Styria in Austria, was just in time to present the new Syncrofalke with EPSILON crane at this year's Austrofoma.
Mayr-Melnhof had been searching intensively for a new crane to further develop its cable crane combination since 2014. Extensive load measurements carried out at the University of Leoben resulted in the technical specification for the new EPSILON S280L94 – a log crane with a net slewing torque of around 50 kNm (gross 58.7 kNm). The crane also has a reach of 9.4 m and a lifting moment of 229 kNm at a working pressure of 250 bar. At its maximum outreach, a total weight of 2,353 kg can be hung from the crane boom tip, which will leave enough remaining lifting power for manoeuvring larger pieces of timber once the unit weight has been deducted. Because working with the cables results in extremely high forces, on the base of the crane in particular, the base was completely overhauled for Mayr-Melnhof and adapted to their special requirements. In addition to a general optimisation of the steel components and the use of the latest welding processes, the slewing cylinders were also specially adapted to the high torques. In order to ensure consistently high quality and a long service durability, the cylinders, like an average of 80 percent of all steel components in every crane, are produced by Palfinger itself.
